High Security Locks

You jiggle the key a little and the old deadbolt opens even when the cut does not look quite right. If your worn key can do that, you wonder what a stranger with the right tools could do.

In plain words

This service suits anyone who wants to stop wondering. Homeowners who have inherited unknown keys with a house, landlords who want one controlled key system across units, and businesses protecting stock, records or medication all ask for it. The locksmith explains the choices in plain terms, from a graded deadbolt with a patented cylinder up to laboratory-rated cylinders and heavy commercial lock bodies, and helps you decide which doors deserve which level. Then the work is done cleanly, every key is tested in every lock, and you leave with the documents that let you control future keys.

Sound familiar?Erindale

The call
A colleague showed you a video of a lock being opened with a bump key in a few seconds. Then you went home and noticed your own deadbolt is the same style, bought at a hardware store a decade ago.

How the visit goes

  1. Scene 1

Door, hinges and what surrounds them

The door itself is inspected as part of the lock. Hollow-core doors, thin panels beside the lock, and hinge screws that barely bite into the frame all undo the value of a strong cylinder. The locksmith checks how the door hangs, whether it drags or needs a shoulder to close, and whether the hinges are on the secure side. Glass close to the lock is noted, because a hand through a broken sidelight can reach an inside thumb-turn. None of this rules out an upgrade; it shows which supporting pieces belong in the plan so the whole opening is brought up together.

  2. Scene 2

    Testing the whole assembly

The finish is a methodical test. Every key is cycled in every lock from both sides, with the door open and then closed and latched. The bolt is watched entering the strike pocket to confirm it throws fully and does not drag. The door is pushed and pulled while locked to feel for play at the strike or hinges. Cylinders receive a dry lubricant approved for their mechanism. Then the locksmith walks you through the operation, the key control documents and the record of hardware fitted, so you know both how to use the door and how to order the next key.

  3. Scene 3

    Ordering keys the right way

Extra keys are now a small procedure rather than an errand. An authorised person contacts the locksmith, the request is checked against the system record, and the key is cut from code so it works as cleanly as the first. New keys are numbered and added to the register. Businesses often issue keys against a signature and collect them when someone leaves, which the register makes simple. Homeowners typically keep two or three spare keys and hold onto the authorisation card. A key cut from a worn copy would not release the sidebar properly, which is one more reason the code route is the only route.

What shapes the quoteErindale Lock Experts

Key control level
A patented keyway with authorisation cards covers most homes. Geographically exclusive keyways and signature-controlled systems for businesses carry registration and administration that show in the quote.
Distance and access
A rural property, a high-rise with loading dock rules or a site that must be visited outside trading hours affects travel and scheduling, and the quote says so plainly.
Number of keys cut
Every key is cut from code on a machine that handles side bitting or angled cuts, so the count of keys you want at handover is a real line rather than a rounding error.

Let's clear a few things up

What is bumping, and does this stop it?

Bumping uses a specially cut key that is struck while under light turning pressure, bouncing the pins to the shear line for an instant so an ordinary cylinder opens. It works on many standard pin tumblers. A high security cylinder needs its sidebar released by separately positioned finger or rotating pins at the same moment, and a bump key cannot set those, so the plug stays locked. It is one of the clearest advantages of the upgrade.

Is a high security cylinder really pick proof?

Nothing is beyond a laboratory with unlimited time, so the honest measure is minutes, not absolutes. Rated cylinders are tested to resist skilled picking and impressioning for a set period, and drilling and forcing for another. In the real world that matters because someone at a door has seconds, not a workbench. The sidebar and false grooves in the pins give a picker nothing reliable to feel, and the hardened inserts stop a bit, which is why these attacks move on to easier doors.

What does key control mean in practice?

It means your key can only be copied through the locksmith who manages your system, after checking that the person asking is on your list of authorised names. Blanks for the keyway are not sold to hardware stores or kiosks while the patent lasts. Each key is numbered and recorded, so you know how many exist. For a home that ends the worry about old copies; for a business it turns a lost staff key into a known, manageable event.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 38 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.Homes of different generations tend to have different key habits. Older houses may have keys copied many times; newer ones may still have contractor keys about. A locksmith in a mixed area asks about both before recommending anything.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).Where most homes are apartments or condos, storage lockers, bike rooms and parking gates carry their own locks. A locksmith can supply and key padlocks and cam locks for those spaces so one household ring covers everything it uses.
