Every job in Erin Mills starts with a proper look before anyone touches a tool. The locksmith checks the cylinder, the latch, the strike and the way the door sits in its frame, then tells you what he found and what he suggests. The price is given at the door once that look is done, so it reflects the actual hardware rather than a guess, and it is the same fee at any hour.

How a visit goes

For a business, a lock is really a question of who. Who holds a key, who left with one, who needs to get into the stockroom but not the office.

    Step 1 of 5

    Call and describe the door

Describe the property, the hardware and what has changed, and the visit starts from what you have seen.

  2. Illustration: a white work van with its headlights on, driving a lit street at night

    Step 2 of 5

    On our way

We look at the existing lock, the door thickness and the holes already drilled. Sometimes a new cylinder is enough; sometimes the whole lockset has earned its retirement.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 38 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area of varied housing ages, rekeying is the one job that fits every door. Old cylinders and new ones both take fresh pins, so a household moving into either kind of home can start with keys that nobody else holds.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).Attached housing turns over more often than detached, so rekeying between tenants or owners is a constant. Because suite doors tend to be standard, the job is usually a straightforward pin change and a fresh set of keys cut on site.

Let's clear a few things up

Can we put a keyed deadbolt on both sides of the back door for extra security?

On a door people leave through while the building is occupied, the door needs to open from inside with one motion and no key, so a key-both-sides bolt is not the right tool there. Security is added instead with a heavy-duty exit device and a reinforced strike, a keyed trim outside, an alarm contact, or a door position sensor on the access system, all of which keep the way out clear.

If the cylinder is replaced, can it be keyed to my existing key?

Often, yes. A replacement cylinder in the same keyway can be pinned to the cuts on the key already on your ring, so the front and back doors stay on one key and nothing else in the house changes. If the old keyway is no longer made or the key is badly worn, the new cylinder comes with fresh keys and the other doors can be rekeyed to match in the same visit.

My lock is the homeowner-rekeyable type but the working key is lost. Can it still be reset?

Yes. Those cylinders let an owner change the key with a small learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. Without one, a design such as Kwikset SmartKey is removed and placed in its own reset fixture, returning it to a blank state; other cylinder types are rekeyed by their own method instead. A new key is then set and the lock goes back on. It is a few extra minutes rather than a replacement.

What information helps before you come out?

Whether the door takes a skeleton-style bit key or a flat key in a round cylinder, roughly when the house was built, what the knob and bolt are doing, and whether the trouble is worse with the door closed. A photo of the faceplate in the door edge and one of the keyhole side is worth a great deal. Mention how many doors are involved and how many keys you would like afterwards.
