- The call
- A roommate moved out on bad terms and says the key was left on the counter. It was not. You have already changed the Wi-Fi password, but the front door still opens for a key that could be anywhere.

The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally.
The visit runs in a steady order. On the phone you describe what was lost, which doors it opened and whether you have a way in. At the door the locksmith confirms your connection to the property, then walks it with you listing every cylinder. Each one comes off in turn, is repinned to the new key and refitted. The first key is cut to the new combination and checked in every lock, and the remaining copies are cut from it. Then every key is tried in every door with you watching, the count is agreed, and the new key code is written down for future copies.

Scene 1
With the cylinders read, the locksmith can say whether the whole property can live on one key. Cylinders from the same keyway family accept the same blank, so they can be pinned to the same combination. Where the front door is one family and the garage entry another, the choice is to keep two keys or swap one cylinder for a compatible one during the visit. Five-pin and six-pin cylinders, and homeowner-rekeyable types, each have their own limits on what they can be matched to. A minute of comparing keyways before the work begins is what makes a single ring possible afterwards rather than a near miss.
Scene 2
Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.
Scene 3
A rekey is the natural moment to decide where the spare goes, because the one under the planter is the reason many of these calls happen. A key with a trusted neighbour or nearby relative is the simplest answer. A small combination lockbox fixed in a discreet spot, with the code shared only with the people on your list, is a step up and can be fitted before the locksmith leaves. For families with a keypad lock, a personal code for each member does the same job without a key at all. Whichever you pick, the spare is now a planned thing with a known home rather than a habit.

Yes. Those cylinders let an owner change the key with a small learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. Without one, a design such as Kwikset SmartKey is removed and placed in its own reset fixture, returning it to a blank state; other cylinder types are rekeyed by their own method instead. A new key is then set and the lock goes back on. It is a few extra minutes rather than a replacement.
The opener on the garage ceiling holds a memory of every remote paired to it, and it can be erased in one step so the lost remote is forgotten. The remotes still in the household are paired again afterwards, and a keypad on the outside of the garage gets a new code if you have one. The locksmith can do this during the visit, and it takes only a few minutes at the opener.
Just the lock, and the door it is fitted to. A rekey works on the cylinder itself: the locksmith opens it, fits a new set of pins matched to a fresh key, and the old key stops working the moment that is done, whether or not it ever turns up again. Knowing roughly how the old key looked, cut on both edges, a chip on the head, a certain brand, can still help identify which cylinders in the house shared that key.
